Danny: At The End Of A Very Long Road
Friday 30th July 2004
What a week. First we were at Abbey Road playing Gravity live over and over. Youth makes a cameo appearance in the video as well. So does J. We decided to give the stunts and burials and tightropes and miming a rest and just play the song. If you think my lip sync is out its cause I'm not lip syncing I'm singing it live. This was better than usual because when we mime Mike has to hit fake cymbals because the real ones make too much noise. And everyone has to pretend they're feeling it instead of actually feeling it. Sometimes they get you to sing the song double speed. I remember having to do this in the "My Weakness..." video. It was about 3am and I was hanging from a piece of wire while two still tramps tried not to giggle at me. I had to look over my shoulder lovingly at that funny looking woman and sing the chorus at double speed. This I had to do about 20 times, before my hands finally gave way and I fell. This was when the director said cut. So just playing the song for real was a nice change.
We've finished all the artwork as well. For the sleeve to Gravity I had the idea of us running late at night from a chasing aircraft of some kind. This seemed like a really good idea until I realised how much running it would involve. The shoot started at Wimbledon common at 8pm and went through the night until 7am the next morning. We did this two nights in a row. Three enormous wind machines were pointed on us to simulate the nearness of the UFO/helicopter. A crane was hired to raise the eye view of the photographer. And spotlights were pointed on us. We ran away and towards the photographer who would take one photo each way. We ran backwards and forwards till the camera ran out of film. We then got a two minute breather and then had to do it again.
How top was it hearing that American guy playing us over there. And the guy requesting us. This works with radio by the way... don't think we don't know how much you all do to try and put the word out about us. Unfortunately because of all kinds of past record company problems we haven't even played a gig out there. I really hope that we get the chance this time around to right that wrong. I love playing live. I've had in my head for months now the idea of starting our next set of gigs with a wall of white noise that caves in as the pounding beat of "Ashes" takes over. I can't tell you how fucking excited I am and how annoying it is to have to wait even another day. There were times during the making of this LP I thought we'd never make it. Not just brief moments but whole months. The gigs we do next will be the best of our lives I fucking promise you. I am fit to fucking burst.
The men in black, the cave, the beach, the mansion... it's that time again... Good luck. SG#10-4A67YX9B will work for a while then it's down to you. The other codes will be popping up all over. Leave no stone unturned. Good luck!!!
