Sometimes a song is an irresistible force and an immovable object at the same time. Sometimes you just can't contain a melody. "I was scared of it for a long time," said Danny of Target, "I thought it was too... pop." But it's not that Target is pop, per se, that scared the singer, although it is - it's the fact that it's perfect. It struts and skips and chimes, an amazing melody given an amazing arrangement, driven and beautiful. It's like a distillation of everything Embrace are best known and loved for; rousing, triumphant, tinged with regret but spun upwards into hope - it just HAD to be a single. As Mickey describes, within the first few bars it imbues you with a feeling that's utterly special, like meeting someone for the first time and knowing instantly that they're going to be incredibly important in your life. By the time the exultant, intractable middle eight rolls round, bouncing the song up another half-a-dozen levels that you didn't think possible, you get a real sense of just how special this song is. It sounds like Embrace, but better.

As ever, Embrace have stuck a few surprises on the b-side - flip the vinyl for a slice of heavy metal called Just Admit It, while on the CDs Thank God You Were Mean To Me is a slice of dirty, lustful guitar groove, One Luck is a psychedelic rocker and Run Away is a ringing moment of gothic romance - fittingly strong support for perhaps the best Embrace single, ever.
